Memory Care- Specialized Support For People With Alzheimer’s Or Dementia

Do you have a loved one who has Alzheimer’s or dementia? As much as you want to take care of them on your own, things might get a little out of control. That’s where memory care comes in handy. Memory care programs provide intensive and specialized care for people with memory issues.

Why Are Memory Care Services Different?

Memory care facilities provide a safe and structured environment. There are set routines in place to reduce the stress for people who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. For example, employees will provide meals and help all their residents with personal care tasks, similar to assisted living facilities. Also, they are trained to deal with unique issues that come up due to people who have Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

In regular assisted living facilities, people are expected to manage their own time. Therefore, Mealtimes and menus are posted, and the staff will not check on the residents. However, in memory care homes, the team will ensure that every resident will eat their meals, attend activities, and do everything they need. Note that most people with dementia love wandering. However, memory care nursing homes have alarmed doors. Also, there are codes in place to access the elevators.

Memory care centers have outdoor spaces that are enclosed to keep their residents on site. In addition, most memory care nursing homes have tracking bracelets that give residents the freedom to explore around while being monitored. Most of the activities in memory care nursing homes improve cognitive function and engage residents who are suffering from different types of memory loss diseases and at different stages.

Choosing A Memory Care Facility

Once you have chosen among the various memory care facilities available, you should start vetting them. But, first, you can visit each memory care home a few times, especially in the evening when there are fewer people to find out whether or not it’s the right fit for your loved one. Here are some of the things to consider during your visit.

1. Layout And Physical Environment – Is the facility clean and pleasant? Are there circular hallways, or does it frustrate the residents with dead ends? The rooms and doors should be appropriately labeled with words and pictures to help residents find their way around. Is the outdoor area enclosed with a clearly defined pathway? Are the residents happy about their stay?

2. Staff– Have the employees received training to help people with dementia? Is there a nurse always on duty? Are the residents’ needs met quickly? How can the staff manage someone who becomes aggressive?

3. Food And Activities – Are there activities to keep people engaged? For example, how do the staff encourage their residents to eat? Have at least one meal and engage in one movement to see everything for yourself.

4. Availability Of Continuing Care – Some memory care facilities can’t provide complex medical care. Therefore, they accept and find out what would make your loved one kicked out of the memory care home.
